Vote - Week 9

A few words from [personal profile] clauderainsrm:

Another Killer has been taken off the board, but not before their deadly mark could be left on the game!

What will happen next? Only the Wheel knows. But it's quiet for now. Because now is the time for the Poll.

People were asking what this twist was, and it’s quite simple. You vote as you normally do. So read, comment and vote for your favorites! Then tell your friends about it! But then ALL of the votes from the previous weeks are counted along with them. It’s a cumulative result.

The idea was that people who do well all season long, and then have a bad week, shouldn’t be eliminated for it. Whereas I’ve always felt, like the NFL that it’s a case of “Any given Sunday”... so I never took that idea down off the shelf, until now. :)

The Wheel is spinning now to let me know how many contestants will be eliminated. The answer is 2!

So the 2 lowest cumulative vote totals will be leaving us this week.

It’s more important than ever to do your thing *points to the above* advice!

The poll will close Tuesday Sept 16th at 8pm ET.

Good luck to everyone!

Week 9 - The Accusation

Fresh off a major victory of outing a treacherous villain last week, can our heroes do it again?  Can they finally put an end to the evil in this manor, or will they Killer(s) claim another victim?  Or... is it already too late?

We are gathered here to find out the answers to these questions.

So the votes are in, and a single last minute vote was what determined who was going to be accused this week. But one vote is enough...

The residents of the Castle accuse

[personal profile] alycewilson  of being a vile and loathsome traitor!!!

The shrieking starts as soon as those words leave your lips... Alyce goes into convulsions, and does a full back flip as foul smelling black smoke issues from her pores, escaping into the night... in her hand is a small glowing medallion... the light spreads across her, filling her with new life and a renewed spirit.

Congratulations!!! You have vanquished another Killer!!!

Was that it?  Have you caught them all?  Is there finally piece in the cast... another scream is heard and a heavy, savage thud.  You turn as one, and everyone starts screaming and crying...

[personal profile] halfshellvenus  is on the floor, no longer among the living.

Her final words etched in our hearts: halfshellvenus.dreamwidth.org/746724.html

LJ Idol- Prompt 9- Edgelord

Humans bleed red
No matter their skin color.
All broken bodies
Used to laugh.

Blood is life.
So often it drips for politics,
A mother's son dies for a leader's power.

We becomes desensitized
To hate,
"He's just an edgelord."
"She just wants attention."

True.
But how about,
"He doesn't know what love is."
She is hurting."

It's so easy for me to dismiss
The statuses and photos flooding my feed:
So many Go Fund Me's,
So many petitions.
Everyone needs a dollar,
Needs a job,
Needs a chance.

I'm tired,
Numb,
I can't solve them all
So too often I do nothing.
Who deserves my time?
Why do I need to choose?
What if I help the wrong one?

But how did we get here?
Too many of us
Did nothing.

Perhaps that's the saddest part,
In all our ability to know
All the info in the world.
We're just overwhelmed,
Paralyzed.

When life was small,
There were only so many neighbors to wave at.

I can't give up.
But part of each week,
I try to also do the small.

I'm working on my front flower bed.
It's something I can touch,
Something I can change.
A place without shooting drills.

Life is a mix:
Breathe,
Garden,
Vote.
And when able
Defend the rights of all
To plant flowers without fear.
To sleep without the sound of bombs.
To sit in schools without gunfire.

Don't get paralyzed,
By fear or hate.
Sometimes,
Nurture your soul,
Make a life worth fighting for.

The Wheelhouse - Week 9

When we last left off here in the House of Memes, there was a new prompt: therealljidol.dreamwidth.org/1199140.html  and a Twist Reveal that didn't reveal much: therealljidol.dreamwidth.org/1198875.html  or did it? You can't really count on anything being straight forward these days!

***

Remember to make sure to send in your Accusations!!  There is/are still Killer(s) out there!  We know someone else was poisoned, and we know an antidote was given out. But what we don't know is it if made any difference.  I guess we won't know until someone else drops dead!!!

Accusing people is the only way for you to stop their evil deeds!!!

***

How are YOU doing?  What have you been up to?  Seen anything cool lately? Done anything cool lately?  Done anything that wasn't as cool, maybe not lately but any time at all?

Prompt - Week 9

The prompt for this week is another one suggested during that Patreon campaign.  Seriously - you should become a Patron.  ;)

I had all of the Patreons at that time period send in a couple prompt suggestions and I picked my favorite of them and used them in that mini season.  Others have appeared in other seasons.  This is the last of those, it actually came from someone who is currently participating, which should make things interesting!!!   Thanks to our own [personal profile] bleodswean !

The prompt is

Edgelord

The deadline to link your entry back to this thread is Thursday, Sept 11th at 8pm  ET.   (not ominous at all)

Twist Reveal - Week 9

The wheel is back in motion to determine your fate in this new week.

What will it decide?

*spins*

Twist!

But which twist Wheel, which twist...

Oh, this one actually is from an Idol contestant. Two of them actually ...  something both of them were trying to convince me to do for years!!

Voting this round is going to be a little more interesting.  I'll tell you about it when we get to that part. But I will say your past is going to come back to haunt you!

Thank you so much for coming out for this wild ride, and I hope you will keep Home Gaming, and jump back in when the wheel lands on something that allows it!

On her way out, she kicks something that was dropped on the floor.... it rolls across the room before hitting the wall and shattering.... it's an empty vial.  The Killer(s) have taken their revenge!  But who did they poison?

Vote - Week 8

A few words from [personal profile] clauderainsrm:

A Killer has been caught, but the game continues! Ths week was a Quck Fire, where contestants had less than 48 hours to write an entry! I haven’t read everything (yet) but what I’ve seen so far has been really good! Maybe we should have short deadlines all the time! ;) *runs*

Seriously though, it wil be a shame to send anyone home with what I’ve seen so far, but isn’t that usually the case?

How many are leaving us? I don’t know! Let’s ask the Wheel!

*spins the wheel*

One contestant will be leaving us.

So, that’s good at least!

The poll will close Friday Sept 5th at 8pm ET. It's a short turnaround time for voting as well! So make sure to Read, Comment and Vote for your favorites!!

Good luck to everyone!

Week 8 - The Accusation

For 8 Weeks now, we have assembled in this room to try to end the threat of the Killer(s) once and for all.

And every time, you have been told that when you find a Killer, you will be told... and weeks have gone on, your numbers have dwindled...

Would you ever find a Killer or will the murders just continue until there is no one left?

***

This week there was actually decent participation. Thank you for that... and the vast majority of votes fell on a single person.

This week you accuse [personal profile] bleodswean of being a Killer!!

***

There is a scream, and it doesn't take you very long to realize who it is... it's bleodswean and she's twitching like something out of the Exocrist. She collapses on the floor, grasping on to a small medallion that it clutched tightly in her hand.  It starts to glow, and the glow overtakes her entire body, filling the room with light.

The light intensifies until it hurts to look at her, when it fades, the medallion is gone... and she is herself again.  A Killer no more. Finally free.

Congratulations!!!

LJ Idol: Prompt 8- "Infrastructure"

Ultimately, one could say the infrastructure of our lives is in our genes. Many of the genes within me and my children came from countries other than the US (where we live now).

My husband and I had our genome analyzed (just out of curiosity). According to the Nebula Genomics, my genome ancestry is:

29% Northern and Central Europe
29% Scandinavia (Sweden, Norway and Iceland)
19% Finland
12% Northern British Isles
8% NE Europe
3% Northern Italy

On my mom's side of the family, my great-grandpa Edward was born in Sweden. His parents brought him to America as a child. His wife, Ida, was also was born in Sweden and came to America as a child. Ida gave birth to 8 children. Her 7th child was my grandpa, David.

The 7th child of 8 kids (my Grandpa, David) married the 7th child of 7 kids (my Grandma, Sara). Sara's parents were both Norwegian immigrants (named Charles and Sara.) Sara's dad , Charles, died at age 94 in 1964. Charles' dad, Hans N, died at age 86 in 1840. Based on some of my relatives ages, I wasn't surprised to find out through Nebula Genomics that I do carry longevity genes. The long lives of some of my relatives are even more amazing when you think about how primitive medical treatments were in the past.

My grandfather, David, died in 1987. For some reason, my memories of him begin when I was 9 years old, though I have photos of us together when I was younger. I don't remember him before I was 9 and that year (and perhaps before that?) he already had Alzheimers Disease. Whenever he saw me (at age 9), he would ask why the neighbor kids were in his home again.

Recently, I was looking for information on when he died (1987) and came across the following link. It contains the audio recording of an interview with him. My mom and her sisters (David's daughters) were amazed to finally hear his voice again. They didn't even know that this interview had ever been conducted. If interested, you can hear it too:

https://digitalcommons.morris.umn.edu/kmrs/56/

I enjoyed listening to the interview. I don't remember him telling stories about life before he was my grandfather.

On my dad's side, his father Melvin was born to Carl (my great-grandfather). Carl was born in Sweden. Carl came to America as a child, later married Ellen (who was born in Nebraska) and she gave birth to my grandpa, Melvin. In doing some research on my great-grandfather, Carl, I learned that Carl registered for World War I in Wausa, Nebraska. For many years, he supported his parents and his brother, in addition to his wife and children. Carl's dad, John, died at age 95 in 1959.

My grandpa, Melvin married my grandmother, Dorothy. Dorothy's father, Hans was born in Sweden. Hans married Lydia who was born in Michigan and she gave birth to Dorothy.

My grandpa, David, and my Grandma, Sara, had 3 daughters. My mom, Victoria, is the youngest. My grandpa Melvin and Grandma Dorothy had four children, of which my father, JP, was the oldest.

My parents had seven children. I was born second. I now have 3 children of my own. They are 3 of my parents' 26 grandchildren.

I am told a couple of my great-grandparents, but I only remember meeting my dad's grandma, Ellen. I remember carefully dressing my doll as my mom said Great-grandma wouldn't like the first outfit I put on my doll. Ellen died at age 91 in 1991.

Though I don't remember all the ancestors in my family's past, it looks like they all lived and endured through many harsh climates.

Many came to the USA from Norway and Sweden. However, their descendants were not content to stay in the USA. My grandpa Melvin and Grandma Dorothy lived 25 years in Tanzania, 10 years in Malaysia and 5 years in Singapore.

My father JP always said Africa (where he was born) felt more like home than anywhere else. We actually lived in Europe for a year and in Africa for 2 years when I was a child.

I am the second of seven children. My middle child is named Sara after my grandma (and my great-grandma). My sister, Lydia (named after one of my dad's grandmas), lived in Mauritania (Africa) for a year and in Kosovo (SE Europe) for 2 years after she grew up. My sister, Anna, lived in China for three years as an adult. My youngest sister Jubilee lived in Afghanistan for 3 years. Jubilee's daughter is named Dorothy (after my grandmother).

Traveling, roaming, trying new countries is apparently in my genes.

I don't know all the stories of why my people wandered, but my guess is its basically the story of humankind. We moved to find what we felt would be a better life for ourselves and our children. It's the story of humanity. When in drought, we move near water. When in need, we move closer to where we can find or grow food.

I like to think that the roaming of humans is natural. As far as I know, there isn't any Native American in my blood, but I do like their view that land should be respected and cared for, rather than bought and sold.

So much fighting in recent decades is about who is allowed to live here or there. I like to think that anyone could live anywhere as long as they are good stewards of the land.

I don't know where my children may move when they grow up. I know, at this point, they all love to visit far away countries.

Most of all, I remind myself and my children that our ancestors were strong people. They overcame many challenges, and we can make it through whatever happens tomorrow.

Twist Reveal - Week 8

It's time to spin the Wheel to see what sort of fun we are in for...

*spins*

There IS a twist this week!!

But what is it?

*spins the second wheel*

QUICK FIRE!

Oh this is going to cause some chaos.  :)   Because it's already so late I won't make it a 24 hour deadline as originally written out on the Wheel. But I will make less than 48.

Code deploy happening shortly

Per the [site community profile] dw_news post regarding the MS/TN blocks, we are doing a small code push shortly in order to get the code live. As per usual, please let us know if you see anything wonky.

There is some code cleanup we've been doing that is going out with this push but I don't think there is any new/reworked functionality, so it should be pretty invisible if all goes well.

Results - Week 7

You've turned the castle upside down, but there is no sign of any activity from the Killer(s).  Are they even still around?  Or are the signs being wiped away from view by sabotage? Could they be in the room with you RIGHT NOW, plotting your doom?

***

But that's not what we are here to talk about. Because there are Killers, and a Wheel to contend with. But the ultimate enemy is always the Poll.

And this week is no exception, taking a partnership down.

Which means it's time to say goodbye to [personal profile] garnigal and [personal profile] tonithegreat

Mississippi site block, plus a small restriction on Tennessee new accounts

A reminder to everyone that starting tomorrow, we are being forced to block access to any IP address that geolocates to the state of Mississippi for legal reasons while we and Netchoice continue fighting the law in court. People whose IP addresses geolocate to Mississippi will only be able to access a page that explains the issue and lets them know that we'll be back to offer them service as soon as the legal risk to us is less existential.

The block page will include the apology but I'll repeat it here: we don't do geolocation ourselves, so we're limited to the geolocation ability of our network provider. Our anti-spam geolocation blocks have shown us that their geolocation database has a number of mistakes in it. If one of your friends who doesn't live in Mississippi gets the block message, there is nothing we can do on our end to adjust the block, because we don't control it. The only way to fix a mistaken block is to change your IP address to one that doesn't register as being in Mississippi, either by disconnecting your internet connection and reconnecting it (if you don't have a static IP address) or using a VPN.

In related news, the judge in our challenge to Tennessee's social media age verification, parental consent, and parental surveillance law (which we are also part of the fight against!) ruled last month that we had not met the threshold for a temporary injunction preventing the state from enforcing the law while the court case proceeds.

The Tennesee law is less onerous than the Mississippi law and the fines for violating it are slightly less ruinous (slightly), but it's still a risk to us. While the fight goes on, we've decided to prevent any new account signups from anyone under 18 in Tennessee to protect ourselves against risk. We do not need to block access from the whole state: this only applies to new account creation.

Because we don't do any geolocation on our users and our network provider's geolocation services only apply to blocking access to the site entirely, the way we're implementing this is a new mandatory question on the account creation form asking if you live in Tennessee. If you do, you'll be unable to register an account if you're under 18, not just the under 13 restriction mandated by COPPA. Like the restrictions on the state of Mississippi, we absolutely hate having to do this, we're sorry, and we hope we'll be able to undo it as soon as possible.

Finally, I'd like to thank every one of you who's commented with a message of support for this fight or who's bought paid time to help keep us running. The fact we're entirely user-supported and you all genuinely understand why this fight is so important for everyone is a huge part of why we can continue to do this work. I've also sent a lot of your comments to the lawyers who are fighting the actual battles in court, and they find your wholehearted support just as encouraging and motivating as I do. Thank you all once again for being the best users any social media site could ever hope for. You make me proud and even more determined to yell at state attorneys general on your behalf.

So where were we? I promised to tell you about my trip! Which means I haven't given you a real life update in about a week!

I've been trying to "Say Yes" to the opportunities that are being offered. Which is how, the night before I was going on my trip I ended up at a Glow Gala charity event for the local children's museum.

Me, in a room with a bunch of rich people "dressed up all fancy". My friend Sara had been the Creative Director years ago and based on the all of the staff and Board Members coming up to her during the event is still a "STEM celebrity" in the area from all of her work in teaching and expanding access to STEM education (including having a recurring spot on the news where she lives! She just invested in a STEM bus and will be talking it on the road to various stadiums throughout baseball season. She just made arrangements with the Red Sox to come up... none of that is about ME, but it's cool to see old friends being so successful! It's like if I brought a friend to an Idol Gala!! Or... *thinks*, nope, it would pretty much have to be an Idol Gala! ;)

I'm not sure how much experience anyone here has being in a room with people who are spending thousands of dollars at an auction on a whim. But it's very surreal.

I looked over at one point and realized a few tables away was the CEO of my former company. You know, the person who pulled the trigger on firing me. (Because there was absolutely zero chance that it was done without her approval) After the auction I walked over to say hello. When she realized who was coming toward her, she legitimately looked like a deer in the headlines looking for a place to run. It was a pleasant chat. She gave me a side hug and said it was good to see me, and introduced me to her husband. I told her that I was glad to see that things were going so well with the company now. She seemed relieved when I said that, and relaxed. Maybe this will result in people no longer being pulled into meetings and threatened with disciplinary action just for talking to me!

Anyway, you haven't lived until you see a bunch of white rich people dancing to 80s and 90s hip hop. That incompatible image is one you can't unsee. :)

Anyway, so I didn't get back to the house until after midnight. My flight to Dallas was at 7:20. I slept for a couple hours. Literally a couple hours, before I had to hop back in an Uber and head to the airport.

Slept some on the plane. As much as I could.

Got into Dallas. Met up with my friend Rachael and walked around. More of a recent friend so it was the first time we've met in person. It was nice getting to hang out, it was a shame that she wasn't able to make the show! We saw the giant eyeball in downtown Dallas, the farmer's market and this place called Thanks-giving Chapel.   www.dallasadex.org/lost-and-found-contemplating-thanks-giving-square/

That place is really special.  Afterward we were going to go somewhere else, but cut through a hotel and ended up in the lobby sitting and talking for a couple hours until our friends Shelley and Eileen showed to take me to the concert.

We drove down to Waco.  The show was great but I was EXHAUSTED!  My seats were great, but my friends were on the floor of the stadium.  At one point toward the end I look over and Shelley has joined me... and asks if I'm ready and I'm too tired to know what she's talking about.  She grabs my hand, and positions it so security can't see that I'm not wearing a wrist band, and then moves my hand so it's around her so the second series of security can't notice the lack of a band either!  :D  She's obviously a pro at this.  Note to security - just let her do it! It's for a good cause!  :)

Honestly, that moment of her knowing that I was feeling alone - even in a sea of people - and wanting me to feel included, that meant more than I can possibly express. She's a really good friend (she was the one who gave me the ticket in the first place, and then kept getting more tickets from people and traded up several times!)  Standing much closer to the action definitely improved the show.     crescentvale.com/2025/08/boys-from-oklahoma-concert-turnpike-troubadours-cross-canadian-ragweed-and-more-rock-waco/

The main acts were Cross Canadian Ragweed and Turnpike Troubadours.   Throughout the show there were guest stars who came out. They saved the biggest one for the end - Robert Earl Keen!!  (If you don't know who that is, that will make no difference. If you do though, you KNOW how big of a deal that is for him to just appear out of nowhere unexpectedly!)

Afterward I went back to Dallas in an Uber and tried, unsuccessfully, to sleep in the airport that was already opened and busy by the time I got there! I was pretty much a zombie when I got back to Tampa!  (Slept most of the flight)

All of this happened because I've been saying "Yes"... I may need to set up a "Say Yes" fundraiser though because that's going to get a lot more difficult in the coming, rest of my life.  :D

Seriously though, it was a really good weekend, and I really needed it.

Things are the house are decent. I love being around Cynthia and she seems much happier without having to be "the wife" role on her. It's nice to see her smile again. Not sure how much longer I will be living here (lots of variables at play) but I want to enjoy the time we have together.
