Perdido Street Station

I finished reading Perdido Street Station. Now, I know at least one of my friends has read this book, quite some time ago. At the time, I think they recommended it, or at least said that it was chock full of fascinating stuff. I'm reasonably certain, however, that they didn't tell me two particular things that appeared in it, or I would have read it long before now.

1) Cactus People.
2) Giant, flying, human-piloted jellyfish.

One of those alone would have motivated me to check it out of the library the next day. Both in the same book is just mind boggling. This is not to say that this was my favorite book of all time. I'll admit that it was fascinating, and difficult to put down. But if you've read the book yourself, you know that fascinating things aren't necessarily good for you.

After a while, the overwhelming despair of the setting started to get to me. The overwhelming despair of the situations that befell the characters also started to wear on me. I think I needed a little more cheer, or perhaps just a bit less despair. Also, I would have liked a bit less creepy sex. It wasn't so overwhelming that I stopped reading or anything, it's just not really something I like reading about.

Overall, I liked it. It had a very rich setting, and I could never deny that it was well written. The section where we meet that caterpillars for the first time totally sucked me in - I was desperately curious what the heck they turned into. The scene with The Ambassador was similarly awesome. Lots of good stuff in there, beyond the cactus people and jellyfish.
