Rocks and Explosions
I never got around to writing a detailed chronicle of my visit to the 17th Annual East Coast Gem, Mineral, and Fossil Show in Springfield, MA back on the 13th. It's worth mentioning that I think we bought half of the octopus carvings at the show. Of course, octopi aren't a popular subject for stone carvings, so buying half of them only amounted to buying two. Still, they are both very nifty. We bought a lot of carvings and stuff like that this year - I was joking that "real" mineral collectors were going to look down on us, since we were buying spheres and obelisks and carvings instead of "specimens." The thing is, we've been going to these shows for quite some time now, and if there's a mineral that we don't have any of it's usually because it's either ugly or ludicrously expensive. Sure, we could buy another pretty piece of something like azurite, but it's probably not going to be significantly different from any other piece of azurite that we already own. On the other hand, we didn't own a single octopus carved out of striped jasper prior to this show, so at least it's something new and different for the collection.
Saturday the 21st I went off to the Wizard's Tower for the prerelease tournament for the newest L5R set. There were only six of us, and after two rounds we had two people who were undefeated, so they faced off for the prize. I was rather disappointed that since there was no other prize to play for, the players that weren't playing for first didn't bother to play any more. I guess they showed up just to try for the prize or, more likely, to get their cards a few days before they would otherwise be available. I mostly went to play, so it was a bit of a let down.
Saturday the 21st was also the 15th Annual Jaffrey Festival of Fireworks in Jaffrey, NH. I was disappointed in this as well. The music was absurdly loud - I had to sit through the whole thing with my fingers jammed in my ears, or else sit there in actual pain. The fireworks weren't well synched with the music, the theme was ridiculous, and the fireworks themselves weren't as impressive as they have been in previous years. Blah.
On a totally unrelated note, I finally swapped my default icon over to the spooky eye rather than the burning lightbulb. I've had the lightbulb as my identifying graphic all kinds of places online for a really long time now, and I think it's time I give it a break, at least on Livejournal. I keep using the eye lately for posts, and it seems silly to have something set as the default and then always select something else to use instead.

...Flourescent anything capital of the world being in NJ?
It is a bit ironic, isn't it?
