I was really nervous about the first class. I wasn't sure what the rest of the students had covered in the beginner's class, and I wasn't sure if I'd be behind. I also worried that it was possible I'd be too far ahead, but that wouldn't be nearly so bad - at least I'd still be getting practice.

I walked in and found four other people already seated, busily drawing their keys. So, even if I'm not behind in terms of technical skill, I started off behind them on the first task. Great. I guess she must have just started people as they arrived, or something, because I wasn't actually late. Anyway, I signed in, was given a white board on which to set my keys, and told to draw them just a little bigger than real life, but just to do outlines and not bother with shading, yet. Then, we would take a small section of the drawing and just draw that, much bigger, with details and shading and whatnot.

I rushed a lot trying to get my key sketch done, because I felt as if I was already behind. Then I had some trouble trying to do the more finished sketch of a small section, because I realized that my original sketch was flawed in many ways. It was going to be hard to accurately draw the reflections and shadows that existed in real life and still have them match up to the layout in my original. Eventually we worked out that I should pay more attention to the actual keys than to my flawed sketch, and things got better from there. The instructor came by at one point and mentioned that I "obviously knew what I was doing," so that was good. Some of the other students looked over and agreed that mine was coming along great, so that also made me feel a lot better. It allayed my fears that I would be way behind and possibly resented if I seemed to be holding the class back.

One person finished his keys early, and was looking for something else to do. The instructor brought out some skulls and other bones for him to sketch, and there was much discussion regarding whether this was bizarre or creepy. Considering that most of the things I've been drawing lately have been horrible imaginary monsters and Abyssal Exalted in Soulsteel armor, I didn't see any problem with skulls at all. In fact, I'm looking forward to the class (next week or the week after) when our task for the session will be to draw the full skeleton that the instructor has. It will be good practice for something I'm likely to draw in the future, unlike a bowl of fruit or something like that.

So it looks like things with the class should work out, which is a relief. Guess I'd better get back to drawing horrible monsters.
