hwango: (hermit crab)
Argh, already so far behind. But that's what happens when one doesn't actually write every day. I keep getting sidetracked by other things - fiddling with Doomtown, watching TV or movies, playing a couple of games of Carcassonne online, reading other books...It's been a bad week for getting anything constructive done, actually.

Tonight I worked on some back story for how the setting got to be the way it is, and made a few more decisions about the nature of the horrible alien things that appear to have allied themselves with the surviving bits of humanity. My earlier ideas for what they would look like were more demonic, but now I'm leaning towards a more lovecraftian appearance for things. I have long intended the nature of their bargains with humanity to often be about strange, seemingly meaningless things, and that feels like it goes better with things that are truly alien. If they were only asking for blood or souls or other such overt and crude things, then they could be portrayed as demons. As it is, I want them to be more reminiscent of the Fair Folk and/or Yog-Sothoth. Their bargains have more to due with what to name things, or the use of color and light, or other such relatively trivial-seeming things.

Of course, I'm not going to abandon all of the more visceral interactions I had planned. Fore example, the little critters used as messengers still demand a bit of blood before they'll make a delivery, but I've made some drastic changes to their appearance and the rest of their behavior. Their crystal shells hum with a sound like a glass harmonica as they argue over which of them gets to make a delivery. Tee hee.
