fiction - drabble for "Balance"

[hwango]

The alien spaceship looms high above the city, its death ray nearly ready to fire. A team of brave pilots are humanity’s last hope. The fate of the Earth itself hangs in the balance.

Then mom calls me in for lunch.

By the time I make it back to the sandbox, the conflict is over. The neighbor’s dog has trampled the city and buried the alien ship. In the next instant, two things happen.

First, I learn that conflict between two forces leaves them both vulnerable to destruction by a third party.

Second, I become a cat person.
