I was very, very tired when the time came to run Exalted on Thursday, and I was concerned that I was going to be a cranky, ill-tempered Storyteller as a result. My insane plan for dealing with this problem was to bring something fun and silly with me to serve as a reminder that we were all there to have fun, and to dissipate any foul moods in which I might find myself. To fulfill this task, I chose Max Reebo, the leader of the Max Reebo Band and star of Return of the Jedi. Well, maybe not star. Anyway, a few years back he had been incarnated in bean bag form. Naturally I purchased one of these, since I always thought Max was cool, and because he made a bean bag toy of considerable cuteness. It was this bean bag version that I brought with me to my game session.

I warned my players that I was tired, apologized in advance if I snapped at them because of it, and then decided to let them in on my scheme for avoiding such outbursts by poking Max's head above the storyteller's screen. This what met by what at the time seemed like alarm, and curiosity as to what the heck I had there. When I held it up completely and said that it was Max Reebo, reactions were far, far more enthusiastic that I would have expected. One player in particular seemed utterly transfixed by it, and proclaimed it to be the coolest thing ever. Everyone seemed to remember him from the movie in spite of the director's baffling decision not to give him more time on the screen. Truly, it was a revelation to me. I had previously though Max was a strange choice to make into a bean bag as a merchandising strategy, but now it's apparent to me that Max Reebo is far more popular than I ever dreamed, and that many more bean bags might have been sold if only more people had known they were available. Wacky.
