Democracy and Common Sense Triumph!

Wal-Mart's attempt to construct its own autonomous city state has failed.

Quoted from the full story:

"The proposal would essentially exempt Wal-Mart from all of Inglewood's planning, zoning and environmental regulations, creating a city-within-a-city subject only to its own rules."

Thankfully, this incredibly creepy plan has failed, as voters shot it down 2-1.

This is a real relief.

However, Pandora's Box has been opened - despite the voters vetoing the Walmart scheme in California, Walmart is going to try again and again to gain exceptions to local laws in different areas. Other large companies are sure to make the same attempt now that the idea is out.
