Well, the original plan was a whole forest of gnarly trees, in which the trees were hostile and territorial. The tree in the foreground was one of the oldest and most vicious, which is why it has so much space around it. The ground was covered with scars from the trees twisting and lashing at the ground around them. Ultimately, I decided that I didn't like how I'd have to completely redo the lighting for the tree in the foreground, didn't like how the land spread out to the horizon, didn't like that there was no green at all in the piece (and wouldn't be a good place to put any), and some other issues. Here's the last version of that before I moved on to the current version:
