Laughter, frustration, and toys
Aug. 18th, 2003 04:17 pmWell, the crazy weekend is at last behind me. Now I just need my thumb to stop hurting, and I can get on with art and stuff.
I'm very happy for
kaiwoklaw that her comedy performance went well. Out of the six first-time performers, she was one of only two who didn't need to consult their notes. I thought she got more laughs than one of the veteran comedians, too. I'm glad she had so much fun with this, and that so many of her friends came to see her perform. The rest of the show was okay, too.
I assembled my Stikfas dragon. It's awesome. However, I pity any small child who receives this toy. It took me over half an hour to put the 4 tiny connecting rods into their sockets in the wing assemblies. They are the reason that my thumb hurts. I only managed it at all by improvising tools to push the tiny objects into place. Most of the other parts of the assembly went just fine, but I was extremely frustrated by the wings. Also, like the humanoid Stikfas, I feel that the feet hinge in the wrong direction. You can turn them so they face outward, but not inward. This means that if you want to pose the dragon with it's legs spread to the sides, crouching down, the claws don't rest flat on the table. I swapped the lower leg components to fix this problem, but of course this means that my dragon's legs look a little funny.
The "Beta Female" rider is odd. It's smaller than the Alpha Male figures, and proportioned in such a way that it looks almost child-like next to them. Still, she's got a nifty spear, and nice armor. You get duplicates of the arms, legs, and head in both black and caucasian flesh color, and an extra upper torso with slots for a backpack item, which means you have nearly enough pieces to make two figures (missing only a second hip component).
Speaking of new toys, I got the Jellyfish Folkmanis puppet from a friend as a late birthday present, and I also chipped in on her puppet order to get myself the Alien in Spaceship, which is being discontinued. I do love the wacky Folkmanis puppets.
I appear to be obsessed with a couple of songs from this Clay People album ("Fade Away" and "Who am I?"). This is actually another one of those CDs retrieved from the pile of old, unsatisfactory stuff. My tastes in music must have changed, or maybe I just wasn't really in a Clay People mood when I first got the CD, because I actually like this disc better than the other album I have from them. Wacky.
