I got my copy of Skinny Puppy's new offering, The Greater Wrong of the Right, on Wednesday. It's growing on me. At first listen I knew that I liked the first two songs, but then it sort of started to fall apart on me. I actually skipped through most of track 4, and I usually make an effort to listen to every song all the way through at least once, even if it seems that I’m going to hate one.
After a few more spins I've grown certain that I really like tracks 1, 2, 8, 9, and 10. 6, 7, and 8 aren't bad, but I have to be in the mood for them. 4 I still hate*. 3 and 5 don't really do a lot for me, but they're okay sometimes.
I'm amused by the fact that they provided the lyrics to the songs in the CD case, but did it in such a way that it's painful to read them. I'm not sure what point size the type is, but all 50 lines of text fit in a box only 4 inches tall. Everything is in lower case except for the occasional all-caps word. There is no punctuation except for question marks, and no indication of when one song ends and the next begins.
I mentioned back when I first got Windows XP that I found it vaguely creepy that Windows Media Player knew all sorts of stuff about the CDs that it played. I’m amused to see that all it knows about The Greater Wrong of the Right is the name of the CD – the artist is unknown and the track titles are all missing. I suspect this may be intentional on the part of the band. = )
* Update: Okay, I've listened to track 4 all the way through a couple of times, and I've warmed up to it a little. It's still annoying in places, but kind of nifty in others. I'll probably file it with 3 and 5 as songs that I might skip now and then, but will listen to from time to time.
