Insurance is good for what, exactly?

It's not a sure thing, but it looks likely that my insurance company will be charging me a $500 deductable to fix my car if the police didn't catch the guy who ran me off the road. It's comforting to reflect that if only I had plowed into him head on and nearly killed us both it would have saved me $500.
