When leaving
kaiwoklaw's tonight, I had to switch places with someone else in the driveway, so I had to drive my car a bit before letting the engine warm up as much as I would have liked. The car felt unhappy, and I thought that was why. Then I made it out onto a slightly more main road where I could increase my speed to something over 15mph, and the car began to shake ominously, much as it did when I had my seperated tire...only moreso, and at lower speed. I pulled over to discover that I had a completely flat tire. I hope I didn't screw up the wheel driving on it as far as I did.
I walked back to
kaiwoklaw's, obtained Chris, her current houseguest who is way stronger than I am, and enlisted his aid in the event that I needed help getting a nut or two off the wheel, which I suspected that I might. However, my jack was slipping on the ice and it was going to be a nightmare to jack up the car, so we just called AAA. We figured this would mean I was stranded for longer, but it was preferable to fighting with the tire in the miserable cold - and just what the hell is the point of having AAA if you're not going to call them when you have car trouble, right? They told us it would take about an hour, and that I could wait at
kaiwoklaw's apartment and they'd call with a 5-minute warning. Then, as Chris pulled away, the truck showed up. Wacky.
He changed the tire in something like 5-10 minutes and sent me on my way. The car wouldn't start at first, which was a new layer of frustration that I didn't need, but then it finally got going. The donut got me home okay. Now I need to figure out if I should try to get the full-sized spare on, or put my other good tire that's not in service on the real wheel, or what. Grr.
