At last, I have finished the artwork for the critters in my upcoming D&D campaign.

These are a bit cuter than I originally planned, but that's okay. My earlier designs were even more bizarre, with odd numbers of appendages and/or more unusual body shapes, but I finally settled on something a bit more mundane...comparatively speaking. These things need to be an intelligent, tool-using race, and the other designs didn't really work for that.

Story concept, for journal readers who are not members of my gaming group:

Horrible monsters (The Collectors) kidnap loads of people and ferry them away in their groovy magical spaceships to distant worlds for some unspecified and probably horrible reason. On one such journey, a ship full of captives makes a supply stop at a station midway between their homeworld and the target of their latest raid. The station is poised on a tall, narrow mountain peak, far from the majority of the surface of the world, which is mostly crawling with horrible unpleasantness. Shortly after leaving the station, the ship experiences some Bad Stuff. In the ensuing chaos, prisoners escape from their cells and run amok on the ship. They peer out the windows and see the ship headed away from the mountain and several more docked ships of various shapes and designs. They also see that their ship is plummeting towards the ground.

The pilot manages a somewhat controlled landing that allows for a couple dozen survivors, but the ship itself is in pretty tough shape. Survivors who used to be prisoners grab some gear from the wreckage and take off before surviving crew can stop them. Based on the trail of flaming wreckage, it's easy to see which direction the mountain must be in. If the prisoners can make it there, maybe they can get a ride from another ship back to where they came from. It's worth a try, anyway.

The game will revolve around the characters' perilous journey across an alien landscape, all the while pursued by creatures that want to recapture them and carry them away to an uncertain but most likely unpleasant fate.
