I preregistered for some events at GenCon, because one of the crappy things about previous years has been waiting in the incredibly long line to register for events. Also, there's always the chance that all the slots are filled for your event if you don't sign up ahead of time. I'm signed up for 4 Spoils events, including the $13K - here's hoping that I place well and that tournament pays for the trip. = )

Of the events available for Thursday, one of them is a sealed tournament for a Wii. Lots of people don't attend Thursday, so I'm hoping the thinner competition will give me a better chance in that one. It also overlaps with a constructed tournament with a big prize, so hopefully that will bleed off some competitiion as well. I'm not sure where I'd put a Wii or how often I'd use it, so it might end up getting resold if I won...but I just love the mental image of winning the tournament and yelling "Wii!" in triumph. The iPods from last year had Spoils stickers and whatnot on them, and I wonder if the Wii will be similarly decorated.

I forgot to scan the schedule carefully enough to leave room for a Call of Cthulhu event, so I'm going to miss most of those. Thankfully, I left Friday completely open, and there's a mono-faction constructed tournament at 6:00 PM that day, so I'll probably sign up for that. There's another highlander format tournament this year, but it's at the same time as the Final 8 for the Spoils $13K, so let's hope I don't get to play in that. I should make a deck for it, though, so I'm all ready to play in it if I do crappy in the $13K, and thereby try to capitalize on Murphy's Law. Friday has a tournament with a free pass and bus ride to PAX as part of the prize, but I'm not sure how the logistics of that would work for those of us visiting from very far away, so I think I'll pass on that one.

It feels weird to be signing up for all of this stuff. The first year I went to GenCon it was all about the portfolio-showing, and the Call of Cthulhu stuff I got to play in was all bonus. Last year, it was once again all about portfolio-showing, but I knew that wouldn't take the whole con, so I planned a little for other stuff to do, including trying out the Spoils because it was the new, cool-looking game with awesome prizes, and I hoped I'd pick it up quicker than other people and win fabulous stuff. This year, I'm still going to show my portfolio, but even if I weren't I would be tempted to go, because the previous two visits have been so awesome, and because I'm hoping to win more stuff (preferably money) at Spoils tournaments. I am nervous that the competition is going to be so much tougher, though. I won't just be playing against the best players in my area, but the best players in the world, and my quick-learner edge isn't going to apply anymore. Still, here's hoping I come home with a Wii, iPod, and over $3000, eh?
