Doom from the Sky
Dec. 14th, 2008 10:28 pmThose of you in Massachusetts or near it already know that Thursday brought us horrible doom in the form of freezing rain. For those of you on the internet who live elsewhere...yeah, count yourself lucky. I was working on art when the lights started to flicker. A couple of hours later I started to hear periodic crashes outside as branches snapped off under the weight of accumulated ice. There would be a loud bang followed by the sound of pieces of ice clattering across the ground. This was a rather stressful environment to work in, since I kept worrying that a branch would hit the house or my car.
I tried writing an entry for the weekly writing activity anyway, and of course the power went out while I was working on it. I hoped to finish it before the noon deadline if the power came back on, or at the very least go the library Friday morning to finish it. Sadly, I was to learn that pretty much the whole town was without power. So I got cut from this month's activity for failing to provide an entry. Also there was the whole not having heat, light, or running water, since all of those things are electric at our house. I was given refuge at an apartment that does have power, but it still sucks that I can't get any work done on my art assignment and don't have access to the stuff I didn't think to bring with me.
I'm also very worried about my plants. If the temperature in the house drops enough I could lose them all. Losing Zeb and my brain cactus would be the hardest, but it would also be a real shame to lose the really big Christmas Cacti. We've had those things for as long as I can remember. This is to say nothing of my dozens of other cacti and succulents. I can't imagine what it would be like to start over from scratch. So I'm really hoping we get the power back soon, and that it doesn't get any colder in the meantime.

I've actually gotten christmas cactus down around 45 or so without them dying, so you should have good luck with those. The bigger the pots, the better the dirt will hold warmth.
