I realized not long ago that my livejournal has become a place where I mostly post new art and stories, and I no longer talk much about my fascinating day to day life. Oops.

In the recent past I finished reading Boneshaker by Cherie Priest. It was suggested as a sort of book club discussion-like thing on the writing activity in which I participate, so I thought what the heck. It was sort of meh. I don't know, when there's a quote on the front that uses the word "rollicking," I expect zany fun. Instead, it was more terrible bleakness. Ruined lives abound, and at the start of the book the protagonist is a social pariah on the brink of starvation. So, yeah, not so much with the rollicking if you ask me. And I think I never fully recovered from that jarring against my expectations.

I finally got around to watching Ponyo, and it too was sort of meh. It's not that it was terrible - it was cute, and it contained as many jellyfish, octopi, squid, and prehistoric fish as I could possibly ask for. There were a couple of lines of dialog that were hilarious. But I guess I expected more from a Miyazaki film. Even if it was fully of jellyfish. Which are awesome.

This morning I went to the local pick-you-own strawberry place in the hope that they were letting people pick in Field #2, which is where they have the Red Jewel variety. Last week we went picking and they sent us to a different field with a different variety, and they were just sort of so-so. I mean, better than store-bought strawberries, but I have very high standards for this sort of thing. Anyway, I was very pleased that we're back in Field #2 again. Picking was much harder, and most of the strawberries are smaller, but they're very tasty.

This evening we had our first session of our latest D&D 4th game, which is set in the Eberron campaign setting's version of Iceland. Accordingly, I have set up the mailing list calender to send us reminders for "D&D 4th: Hrćđsla in the Frystur Norđur." This amuses me more than it probably should.

I'm trying out the 4th edition take on the Monk. Since D&D monks are of the Shaolin variety rather than the Franciscan, that means I'm all about beating things unconcious with awesome martial arts maneuvers. It fills me with happiness to be able to say on my turn that I'm going to attack with Fist of One Hundred Strikes, or to shrug off incoming damage with Iron Dragon Defense. I even got to make up a spooky death-oriented elven martial arts dojo to belong to which I called the Order of the Falling Leaf. Since I'm a spooky goth elf ninja who is often cloaked in obscuring shadows and who moves enemies around when I hit them, I hunted down a picture of Smoke from Mortal Kombat III to use as my character illustration. This lead inevitably to talk of goofy techno music starting whenever we get into a fight. Good times.
