The Internetz at Uberspeed
Apr. 10th, 2012 04:55 amA week ago I finally managed to escape the nightmare of dialup for the relatively nightmare-free world of wireless Internet fueled by fiber optic juju. Huzzah. I wasn't willing to pay for cable, and we weren't in the radius for DSL, but our recent upgrade to fiber optic for the phone line gave me the opportunity to only double my internet costs in exchange for not tying up the phone, not having to string phone cable into the next room, and of course an increase in speed that means I no longer have to find something else to do while web pages load.
To celebrate my shiny new technology I've mostly been watching TV on hulu, which has been a mixed experience. Productivity suffered for a bit, certainly, and it turns out that I'm going to pretend there was only one season of Darker Than Black (which sucks, because I really liked season one, and was initially excited to find out there was another season). But it will be nice to re-watch a few shows that I thought it would be fun to see again but weren't worth buying on DVD, and the fact that I've seen them before should make it easier to pace them out over time. No more marathon 12-episodes-in-two-days nonsense.
I also thought I'd use the spiffy new speed to poke at Conceptart.org, which used to be tedious and annoying with dialup. I was sort of interested in the Alien Gardener topic, but my idea didn't gel in time (I only found out about it a few days before the deadline, which was on Easter. Not good timing). Hopefully there's a fun topic for one of the activities soon, though. I'd like to get back into the habit of weekly prompts for both art and writing.
