Freed From My Virus Hell
Dec. 31st, 2008 03:09 amEdited: 3 hours ago, this was my post to complain about the nightmare 3 days I have spent accomplishing absolutely nothing because I've been spending all of my time trying to free my computer from the iron grip of the Virtumonde malware. Because I have a slow internet connection, downloading each anti-virus, anti-spyware, and anti-whatever piece of software that I was going to try next consumed a great deal of time. Some failed partway through and had to be restarted or abandoned completely. I made a couple of trips to the library to download particularly large install files to a flashdrive.
Then of course there was the time lost to the scans themselves. I have a lot of files. Typical scans took over an hour each. They would all report back some number of hideous problems, and then claim to remove them. They lied. Spybot Search & Destroy and Ad Aware both identified Virtumonde and said they killed it, and both did no such thing. Some of the other tools I tried didn't even find it in the first place.
At last, I have found salvation - Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware has earned my eternal gratitude. No ad pages have popped up since it appears to have successfully cleansed my machine. Ad Aware didn't find Virtumonde when I ran it again. Let us all keep our metaphorical fingers crossed that this was indeed a permanent solution to this problem so I can get on with my life again.
Finally, I'd just like to say that people who write computer viruses should be sliced open and forced to eat their own intestines.
