Perhaps against my better judgement, I thought I'd give the activities at Conceptart.org another try. After all, the Character of the Week topic was "Lovecraft Cultist." How could I say no? Plus, a lot of the work-in-progress that other participants had posted so far featured characters who looked sane and had put a lot of thought into their squid-themed outfits. That's...not how I picture cultists from Lovecraft's work.
So I painted this.
I did this instead of write something for the writing activity this week, which was a tough choice to make. Then, of course, I had a lot of trouble with the uploader utility to actually submit the piece. I gave up at almost 8:00 AM and decided to try again in the afternoon, since the deadline wasn't (I thought) until midnight. Well, it wasn't Pacific Time like I was thinking...that must be some other activity deadline. It's GMT +1, which means I was about 9 hours off or something. So it's quite possible that even when I finally got it to work after five more tries in the afternoon (grrr) that it didn't actually make it in under the deadline. Which will mean that I wasted hours and hours on something that no one will actually see instead of writing a story that I know at least a few people would have read and, if the past is any measure, probably would have enjoyed.
So...yeah. If my cultist isn't in the poll, I think I should take it as a sign to just not play in the Conceptart activities, lest I give them more opportunities to bring frustration and annoyance into my life.
edit: Well, I seem to have made it into the poll, so that's a relief. I guess I shouldn't give up on Conceptart.org forever. On the other hand, I'm doing awful in the poll, and I'm not impressed by the piece that's winning. So it still might be the wrong crowd for me. I think I'll try one more Creature of the Week at some point and see how that goes. And maybe another Character if there's a good topic, when it seems more appropriate to go for wacky outfit and cool knicknacks - the one for this week doesn't wow me (Holographic Human Interface for Space Smuggler? Huh?)
