Wrath of the Sky Dragons
Jul. 2nd, 2004 03:23 pmI was plugging away my computer during the wee hours of the morning when the thunder started. Annoyed, I powered everything down and tried to decide what to do for another couple of hours until I was tired enough to sleep...I had taken a nap earlier in the evening, so I was even less inclined to be asleep at 3:00 AM than I normally am. Anyway, I started to notice some really impressive lightning flashes, so I went to stand on the front steps to watch the show. I saw some pretty nifty lightning, including one bolt edged in yellow that looked less like lightning and more like the sky being torn open. Eventually it became obvious that a lot of the really impressive stuff was being blocked from my view by some trees, so I decided to drive up the street a bit and park in a slightly more open space. I made sure to stay close enough to tall objects that I wouldn't be an attractive target, even though I don't think it was really that close to me. The rain certainly wasn't - it hardly seemed to be raining at all most of the time.
Some of the lightning was truly spectacular. The entire sky would turn white at times. I think I watched the lightning for about an hour, until it moved away enough that all I could see was the flashes through the clouds. Very, very cool. I suppose I forgive the weather for knocking me off my computer for the rest of the night.
The encore this afternoon was less nifty. We couldn't really see the lightning, and we got tons more rain. We even got hail, which was eerie, since we ususally don't get hail. I didn't rush out into the deluge to get a closer look, but I saw one hailstone that was probably over a half and inch in diameter. Freaky. Thankfully, I don't think anything sustained any damage, and our power only flickered instead of going out completely.
