Don't trust that little gecko.

It's time to renew the insurance for my metal box on wheels. It appears to have gone up, and so I thought I'd poke a bit at other companies to see if I'm getting screwed, or if the price I'm paying is fairly normal. I don't really expect to change companies, but I thought I'd check around anyway.

One of the sites that I poked at was Gieco, and I was stunned when I discovered that they don't actually offer car insurance in Massachussetts. If this is the case, then why do I keep seeing ads for them on Boston-based TV stations? What possibly reason can they have for advertising their services to an area in which they don't actually offer their services?

Wacky. Maybe it's for the people who commute from NH, CT etc. Do they get the Boston channels?

Yeah, I was moderately surprised about that myself when I had been shopping for insurance in January. I suspect what they've done is buy slots of time nationally on national stations, and just not bother to weed out the locales where their products are not offered.

I've been happy with MetLife insurance for my car - while other insurance companies were attempting to make me jump through paperwork hoops, they simply took care of everything over the phone. Very professional, and little or no hold time.

Since Massachusetts standardizes the insurance costs and premiums for the most part (the only discounts available that I know of are for safe drivers, and for AAA) there isn't a huge amount of price difference - so go for whoever gives you the best service as a customer.
