Yikes, it's been a while since I updated this. It was a busy weekend, so now's as good a time as any to update, I suppose.

Friday afternoon I went to see The Prestige. I thought it sounded interesting from the ads, and planned to go by myself since I didn't know anyone else who was interested in it. However, it's more fun to see movies with someone else, so on a whim I asked my mom if she had any desire to see it at all, only to learn that she had never even heard of it. I gave her what little information I had (stage magicians, vicious rivalry, etc.), and she decided that sure, she'd give it a shot. I really enjoyed it, though I was a little disoriented at the beginning by the skipping around in the timeline of events without any sort of indicator for whether we were in the past, recent past, or present. There were a couple of plot holes and such, but they were quite forgivable. It turned out to be one of those movies that I was still thinking about days after seeing it. Plus, of course, David Bowie as Nikola Tesla. Nikola Tesla! I heartily recommend the movie, and would gladly see it again.

Friday evening I headed off to Worcester to watch Battlestar Galactica and Doctor Who. Slept there so as to be closer to TE on Saturday morning. Saturday morning I eventually dragged myself out of bed and headed off to TE for the Spoils tournament or demo I was supposed to be running, but which had gotten almost no publicity, and which took place on a weekend that many WPI players might not even be in the city. So, yeah, nobody showed up. I demo'd the game for one person who was hanging around hoping to play Magic with people, and got his email address so I could let him know when the tournament reschedules. Then I headed home, where I was roped into helping vacuum the dust off some of our radiators so we can turn the heat on sometime soon. Whee. This involves crawling around on the floor behind piles of junk to pry the metal cover off, all the while inhaling loads of dust mites (to which I am allergic) so this is always a super fun time.

After that ordeal, I headed off to visit Laura M to return her Lemony Snicket book so she could pass it on to the next reader in line. We hung around and chatted for a bit, got dinner, and played the Starship Catan game, which I am very fond of, but which I don't often get to play since it's only for 2 players, and most of my gaming time is spent in groups of 3-5. We were nearly done with that when a friend of hers called to say he was in the area, and offered to stop by and visit. I figured I was being traded off for another visitor, but it turned out this was actually a supplemental visitor, and the three of us talked for a few hours before I finally decided that I should go home, tend to some things, and then get to sleep early.

Sunday I got up way earlier than normal and drove to Milford to play in the Spoils tournament being run at TJ Collectibles. I had never been there before, so this was a bit of an adventure, but I found the place easily enough. The bad news: I didn't win and get $500. The good news: I placed second and won $200. I also got some nifty foils and 6 packs. The 6 packs turned out to contain nothing but crap, but it's the thought that counts. Plus, my packs from the actual tournament got me a 3rd copy of Pluck, 3rd copy of Invent, and a 4th One-Legged Hopping Pogo-Bear, so that was nice. My Rogue and Gearsmith decks rejoice, anyway.

Alas, the end of the day is tinged with sadness, as I just learned when I read my email that Wizard's Tower in Nashua will be closing forever this coming weekend on the 28th or 29th. = ( I had heard a rumor of such a thing when I was at GenCon, but hoped that things had picked up for them since they still seemed to be around. I just went there on Tuesday to run a Spoils demo, which was the first time I'd been in the store in months. It was too far away to visit just to hope for a pickup game of Magic or something, and the only other reason I went was for L5R back when I was still playing that. I was sort of hoping to get the Spoils going there, though, so I'd have somewhere relatively nearby that had a play group. Oh, well. I'll miss you, Wizard's Tower.

Too bad about Wizard's Tower. I never went there often but it was nice to know that it was there when needed.

I wonder why it's closing. Maybe it's the location, lack of sales, or just the owner wanting to do something else?
