Saturday - Planar Chaos and Chocolate
Feb. 5th, 2007 02:38 amIt turns out I must be a decent Magic player after all, in Limited anyway. For the third time in a row, I managed to win some packs at the release tournament for the new set at TE - this time for Planar Chaos. I was a little worried going into the tournament that it's been a few months since I played Magic, and my brain was still in Spoils mode from the previous weekend. In particular, attacking in each game is different enough that you really don't want to get confused about which game you're playing. I did catch myself occasionally pausing to look over the board before deciding whether or not to draw (which of course is not actually optional in Magic), but that was the only Spoilism I ended up commiting for the day.
I played a whole bunch of Red and White, being in the enviable position of being able to play only 2 colors without having to resort to playing crappy cards. I was a bit sad not to get to play the dragon that I opened, Teneb, but he's Black/Green/White, and I knew my Green and Black weren't worth playing, while my Red was obviously awesome. Magus of the Arena, you rock. Also, Firemaw Kavu, Rift Bolt, and 2 copies of Dead//Gone. I got to kill things left and right.
I won round 1 with no trouble, then hit a snag in round 2 with a painfully long game that I finally lost. We had 4 minutes left to start game 2, and I actually managed to win that one on the second turn of the 5 you get after they call 'time,' so that round was a draw. I won round 3 and round 4 without too much trouble. No one made it through round 4 undefeated, so I actually had the best record going into round 5...which is fortunate, since I lost that one. I won the first game, but lost the other 2. My record was still good enough to get me into the top 4, though, so that was a relief. Rather than fight it out, we agreed to just split the total prizes for 1st-4th, and take 15 packs each. That meant I could leave earlier, and only be slightly late for the chocolate fountain gathering back in Chelmsford.
I like chocolate, but I like it in completely cooled, solid form (or as ice cream). This meant that I went to ye gathering purely for social reasons. I did get to dip some stuff for someone else, so I could have all of the fun of playing with the fountain without the responsability of actually eating the stuff I dipped. I played in a couple rounds of Apples to Apples, but did awful because I was playing with complete strangers and people I haven't played with before. I think out of the two games I claimed 1 green card.
I was kicking myself for not bringing my portfolio with me. I ran into a bunch of people I don't see very often, and they all asked the usual "what have you been up to?" It would have been nice to be able to show them. Grr. I'll have to remember that for next time.

Date: 2007-02-05 09:09 pm (UTC)Many people made several trips to the fountain, so it can't be too horrible - and I suppose it would vary based on the quality of chocolate that you used. I just don't like melty chocolate. = )
