Last time I asked about my portfolio I accidentally distracted people from my real question, which was what I should paint in the time I had left before the con. Based on replies, though, it seemed like I needed a piece with a complete background. I decided I was low on people, and had no female subjects, so I painted the samurai.

First, is she good enough to take with me? If not, is there some way to improve the piece so she is?

Second, I've got less than a week - is there anything in particular I should try to paint in that time? Another landscape? Some horrible monster? If not, I'll just try to get the Avatar of Silliness done in time.

Paint a mechanical item or a building. Something that shows off some technical skill. If you can swing it, I'd do a city scape from skyscraper level. it'll show off you understand perspective and the city scape is an absolute standard opening shot for comics and scifi things. Most of what you have right now is fantasy oriented.

One thing did bother me with samurai girl. Her hair is a bit too regular. It's all blowing in exactly the same direction and appears to be just sort of slapped on. Since her head is curved, her head should be partially blocking some of the wind and thus making her hair blow out a bit more erratically.

Hmm, I've never done a cityscape before...not sure I can manage something I've never done before in the time I have left to get ready. I can probably manage something mechanical, though.

I can't figure out how to submit a scrap to deviantart - did they get rid of that option, or just bury it? Anyway, I just emailed you an alternate version of her hair. Let me know if it's an improvement.

100% improvement on the hair, though I'd take out that one flyaway piece that's coming out of top of her head. It looks more like a stray mark than hair.

To submit is as a scrap, select "no category" as a the category. Why the hecks its called that on the Submissions page while being called Scraps everywhere else, I have idea.

Thanks - I agree that it looks better, but I doubt I would have thought of it on my own.

The whole "Scrap" thing is very counter-intuitive. Good to know for the future, though.

I've been poking at cityscapes to see what I'd be in for. Were you thinking a view across the tops of the buildings, or from a skyscraper down to street level?

We already talked about this, but for the viewers at home, I still think a steampunk piece would be really cool :)
