writing - brigits_flame - myth
Jan. 23rd, 2009 05:39 amThis is my entry for the writing activity on the
brigits_flame community. The prompt for this week was "Myth."
In the beginning, Moon was alone. To ease his loneliness, Moon took a piece of himself and shaped it into the world. What he had made pleased him so much that he took more of himself and made it bigger. How wonderful this is!, Moon thought, and so he added yet more of himself to the world. He raised up great mountains, carved out intricate valleys, planted mighty forests, and fashioned all manner of creatures to live upon his new creation. He took great joy in everything that he had made, but his greatest love was for the oceans. Moon loved to push and pull at the water and watch the dancing of the waves.
Moon was so proud of what he had made that he wished others to see and appreciate it, and so he made all of the people of the world. Moon smiled down at the world and watched to see the joy on the faces of his newest creations. But the people were not happy. The world was cold and dark. Moon's people and animals stumbled blindly in the darkness, and his flowers and forests withered and faded. Worst of all, his marvelous shifting oceans turned into lifeless ice.
Too late, Moon realized what he had done. He had spent too much of himself to craft the world, and his light had grown too feeble to sustain that which he had made. Moon despaired.
But then Moon looked out upon the tiny lights of the distant stars, and he had an idea. If he brought a star nearer to him it would warm his creation. His oceans would splash and dance again and his flowers would bloom. His people would see the beautiful gift that he had made for them, and they would praise him for the skill with which he had made the world.
Now, Moon knew that the star he chose would be with him for the rest of his days, and so he did not act in haste. He searched the heavens for the most beautiful star, the one that would be the ideal companion for Moon and his world. At last, he spotted Sun, and knew that she would be perfect. Her golden light warmed his heart even when she was but a sparkle in the distance.
But how to bring her near? Moon struggled with this challenge and was beginning to despair once again when he heard a sound. One of the people he had made was singing.
How wonderful it was! The sound filled Moon's heart with hope. Perhaps he could reach out to Sun the same way. And so Moon began to sing.
He sang to the Sun about the beauty of her light, and how it filled him with joy. He sang about the world that he had made, and how much he wanted to share it with her. He sang about the flowers that would bloom for her wherever she looked. He sang about the people who would laugh and play wherever she passed. He sang about his marvelous oceans, and how he and Sun could watch their light shimmer on the waves as they danced around the world together until the end of time. He sang a promise that if she would but join him by his side, then everything he had made and all that he was would be hers forever.
Sun was proud and fierce, and at first she ignored Moon. But then she grew curious about this world that he described, and she listened more carefully to his song. She heard in his voice the love that he had for what he had made, and was touched that he wanted to share it with her alone out of the thousands of stars in the sky. And so she made her way across the heavens to see the world that Moon had made.
As she grew near, Sun's warmth began to restore the world, and by the time she was near enough to look closely it was every bit as wonderful as Moon had described. She flew in delighted circles around the world, always eager to see what lay on the other side, never staying in one place. Moon laughed and raced behind her. Moon was still tired from making the world and could not keep up with Sun, but he smiled at her whenever she passed him.
And so Sun and Moon still continue their joyous dance around the world to this day, never slowing, never stopping. Each day, Sun renews the life Moon gave to the world. And each day and every night, Moon still sings of his love for Sun and how grateful he is that she came to share his world with him.
Whenever you hear the wind blow, you hear the song that Moon sings for Sun.
