Gold!

Looks like my friend Dave enjoyed his gold-panning expedition, and is pleased with the gold that he found. I'm very happy for him, and glad that he got a chance to go. Some other members of the gaming group teased him about how much time and effort he spent for such a little reward. Sure, it's fun to joke about it a bit, but I thought that they went overboard. Even if the amount that he found is nearly insignificant, there's still something special about having collected it yourself. I guess I just remember going on mineral collecting trips and being delighted by some stuff that I found on my own, in spite of the fact that it's crap next to stuff I might buy at a show or rock shop. You really do have to be in it for the fun of collecting. Of course, I've kind of given up on the field trip days for the most part, and would rather do my collecting at a show. Still, I wouldn't give up any of the stuff that I collected from the field myself.

I thought it was awesome. Who knew you could collect gold like that? Imagine collecting a significant quantity and being able to plate something small... or whatever. Just keep it in vials and sit on your hoard like a Dragon.

Which reminds me. If you haven't read Sigurd the Volsung you should give it a look. It's norse I believe? It introduces a dragon who I believe is named Fafnir. Anyway the dragon started out life as a man who became greedy and was then cursed. I took this cool mythology course at Middlesex a while back. :)

Good old Fafnir! It's one of those often-borrowed names for a dragon (or any mount, to make them sound cooler), but I didn't realize exactly what story it was first from.

As far as the gold goes, I think I'd stick to hoarding. I don't know what kind of tools you need to plate something properly.

One of these days we still need to go hunting for clay concretions, or Herkimer diamonds, or something. I remember we sort of planned to do that at some point, but never got around to it.

Sounds good to me. I'm not sure what they are but later on I'll google it. ;)

I'm not opposed to outdoor things provided it's not TOO hot, humid, and I remember my hat.
